Manila, Philippines – Biotek-M Aqua Kit won the prestigious gold medal during the 46th International Exhibition of Invention of Geneva on 11-15 April 2018 at the Geneva Palexpo Arena in Geneva, Switzerland.

Developed by Dr. Raul V. Destura, Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Biotek-M is used for early and accurate detection of dengue infection.

The diagnostic kit efficiently confirms dengue infection in less than hour, intending to lessen admission of dengue-suspected cases and save resources for both hospital and healthcare providers, as well as the patients.

During the radio interview at Radyo Pilipinas DZRB-AM’s “Kita Mo Na, Galing ng Pinoy” produced by the Filipino Inventors Society Producer Cooperative (FISPC), Dr. Destura explained the impacts of the technology on dengue management and overall healthcare in the Philippines.

“The commercialization of Biotek-M can lead emerging businesses in healthcare and biotechnology in the country by achieving not only economic progress but social development altogether,” said Destura.

Biotek-M is one of the technologies assisted by the Technology Application and Promotion Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-TAPI) under the Technology Innovation for Commercialization (TECHNICOM) and Venture Financing Programs.

The technology received an 8.1-million-peso grant for scaling-up production and rolling-out activities from TECHNICOM in 2013 and 6.2-million-peso assistance for purchasing the equipment needed for the production of the diagnostic kit from Venture Financing Program in 2017.

“There are various assistances from the government like DOST-TAPI, which are available for technology generators and researchers. We just need to approach these agencies and submit the necessary requirements to continue our researches further,” reiterated Destura.

Biotek-M is one of the two technologies which brought gold medals from Geneva together with University of the Philippines Diliman’s Smart Surface.
