The Technology Application and Promotion Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-TAPI) recently unveiled the shortlisted finalists of the Gawad Alunig x Dalumat: Empowering Science Stories through Citizen Journalism on 23 and 28 March 2022 in search for science journalists from various schools across the country.

The awarding ceremonies for the Gawad Alunig and Dalumat is on 13 May 2022 during the “Launching of the DOST-TAPI Roadmap and Stakeholders’ Recognition” via virtual platform

The Gawad Alunig x Dalumat, conducted by DOST-TAPI, is an effort to raise awareness and appreciation about science, technology, and innovation through real-life stories from the ground and to uphold the journalistic standards for science communication in the country.

Fifty qualified entries will be competing for the Gawad Alunig: Best KALIPUNAN Correspondent Award and 12 qualified entries competing for the Gawad Dalumat: Best Science School-based/Student-led Publication Award.

Proving their presence in journalism and broadcasting, the qualifiers were featured on the DOST-TAPI produced newscast, Kaalaman sa Agham at Lipunan or KALIPUNAN, which highlighted the finalists' skills in popularizing science through broadcast and written media.

The Institute will award cash prizes of up to Php 20,000.00 to winning entries, as well as medals and official certificates recognizing their participation and victory.

The Gawad Alunig will be given to the most outstanding science citizen journalist who broadcasted a compelling newscast based on the suggested themes of youth initiatives, community impacts, local inventors/innovators/researchers, and regional discoveries.

Meanwhile, the Gawad Dalumat will be given to the Best Student-Led Science Publication that demonstrates exceptional quality, cohesiveness, and journalistic value.

“Information is power. Correct information is transformative. In this era of misinformation and fake news, there is a greater need to provide accurate and timely information,” said DOST-TAPI Director, Atty. Marion Ivy Decena.

As information-age citizens, the Institute seeks to foster a pattern of journalistic excellence toward science and information literacy through various programs.

“We can start by upholding science journalism and putting at the forefront its critical role and contribution to our economy and competitiveness as a nation,” added Dir. Decena.
